[Concert Review] The Canon Logic: Live at Euclid Tavern – October 12, 2011
There’s nothing quite like a weeknight show & cold beer at the low-key, rock-and-roll weathered Euclid Tavern. The Canon Logic, a 5-piece indie act rooted in Brooklyn, infused the building with their Killers-esque, cheery power-pop aesthetic to successfully combat the gloomy Cleveland autumn outside.
Sans the burden of an opening band, The Canon Logic dove straight into a dozen-song set list promptly at 10pm, beginning with their lyrically-charged track “Dead Man” (album – Arcade FM) (lyrics – “I can’t find my ammunition/You can’t find your self control/Ready or not/Load and lock yeah”).

In many ways, their overall sound reminded us of a hopped up version of the French Kicks, mixed with a little tribal percussion and airy vocal overlays to compliment the smooth, pop voice of the singer. We’re certainly not complaining.
This show marked the middle of a 2-week solo promotional tour across the Northeast – the band just released a new EP featuring five new tracks, entitled “Rapid Empire.” In the diverse repertoire of songs played by the group last night, the new EP was heavily represented, along with a few new songs. Particularly enjoyable was the EP track “Am I M.I.A.”

A new song, introduced as “Bombs Away,” featured a nice, slow-rolling bass hook (lyrics – “I can’t handle this hand grenade”). An upbeat, new song (lyrics – “Dancing in rainbows”) was also played. We didn’t catch the exact name of the track. But we liked it.
Aside from being great musicians, the guys themselves turned out to be as genuine and animated as their music. Much can be attributed to their talent for being their own sound technicians for the evening & sounding fantastic (considering the Euclid Tavern does not provide one).

The remaining shows for their tour are as follows – take this chance to see them in a smaller venue before they blow up:
10.18 – New York City (Spike Hill)
10.19 – Hoboken, New Jersey (Maxwells)
10.23 – Brooklyn (Sounds Australia)
Also, check out The Canon Logic cover “Real Love” by John Lennon. Great show guys.
