Forget-Me-Not: The Beatles – “Tomorrow Never Knows”
Turn off your mind, relax, and float downstream with “the most experimental and psychedelic track on Revolver….”
Credited as a Lennon and McCartney collaboration, “Tomorrow Never Knows” was actually written by John Lennon. He adopted the tune from Timothy Leary’s The Psychedelic Experience: A Manual Based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead, which Lennon bought, went home, took LSD, and followed the instructions exactly as stated in the book.
So as you can imagine, Lennon thought the tune was pretty far out.
“Tomorrow Never Knows” is derived from Indian music and is based upon a C drone. The “chord” over the drone is generally C major, with some changes to B flat major.
Some say that song was originally titled “Mark I,” but others state the original title was “The Void.” The actual title was apparently adopted from a Ringo Starr word screw-up.
Regardless, “Tomorrow Never Knows” was lightyears ahead of its time. Everyone should know this song.
