Monday Blues: Jimi Hendrix – “Red House”
Feed your Monday Blues with Jimi Hendrix – “Red House.”
“Red House” was written by Jimi Hendrix and was one of the earliest recordings done with The Jimi Hendrix Experience. The song was recorded in a twelve-bar structure – a popular blues chord progression.
“Red House” was originally recorded for the 1967 Are You Experienced album, but was cut from the United States release because “America does not like the blues.” The song was later released on the 1969 Smash Hits album.
Noel Redding, the Experience bassist, said that Hendrix once told him, “The song was written about his old high school girlfriend Betty Jean Morgan,” although Betty Jean’s house was reportedly brown.
Since Hendrix’s death, “Red House” has become a blues staple. Buddy Guy, Joe Lee Hooker, and many other blues musicians have covered “Red House.” Boz Skaggs and Slash performed their interpretation of “Red House” at a concert for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
So, cure your blues with the master himself, Jimi Hendrix.
